The Barking Lot Capital Campaign:
Make a Gift Meow!
The animals of Save-A-Pet are getting a new parking
lot and construction is happening NOW.
On Sunday, August 5, we kicked off a capital campaign to replace our parking lot. Our
parking lot is now 23 years old, past the typical 20-year life of an asphalt lot. The
potholes are a hazard to cars and people alike and the disintegrating asphalt makes life
hard for our volunteers and prospective adopters.
Let’s be honest: none of us really wants to spend money replacing a driveway or parking
lot. It’s not the most glamorous of projects, and it’s certainly hard to make a direct
connection between convenient parking and animal welfare. Nevertheless, part of being
good hosts and good stewards of Save-A-Pet’s resources is maintaining our building and
grounds, including the parking lot. That’s why we collectively agreed to replace the
parking lot and create a maintained and welcoming experience for the many volunteers
and guests who share our building with us.
So what will it take to get the job done?
685 Tons of Asphalt
35 Semi-truck Loads
28,000 square feet of lot to cover
The engineering estimate for the repair is $100,000. If you consider this cost over the 20+
year life of the lot, it isn’t such a bad deal: $5,000 per year, or $18 a day. Put another way,
if we have 50 cars at Save-A-Pet each Saturday, then the average cost is $2 per car, per
week, over the life of the Barking Lot.
As you are able, please make a gift, MEOW, to help Save-A-Pet with the much-needed
parking lot replacement. You can also contact David Diaz at 847-740 -7788 ext. 108. Thank you
for doing your part to keep Save-A-Pet a safe and welcoming place for our community
and animals.
